The International Experience Canada (IEC) program allows young Foreign Nationals to travel to Canada and earn Canadian work experience. To participate in the IEC program, the participant’s country of citizenship must have an agreement with Canada that allows the applicant to apply for an IEC work permit.
Depending on their country of citizenship, eligible participants will be able to choose from up to three categories under the IEC program:
- Working Holiday;
- Young Professionals; and
- International Co-op Internship.
The Working Holiday category is for participants who do not have a job offer from a Canadian employer, and would like to obtain an open work permit so that they can work for multiple Canadian employers at various locations.
The Young Professional Category is for Foreign Nationals who have a job offer in Canada where they will be working for the same employer in the same location throughout their stay in Canada.
The International Co-op Internship is for students registered at a foreign post-secondary institution. Eligible participants will have a job offer for a work placement or internship in Canada working for the same employer in the same location. The work placement or internship must be required for the participant to complete their studies.
To apply for an IEC program, you will be required to complete an online profile, which is entered into a pool of candidates. There is one pool of eligible candidates per country, per category. If your profile is selected from the pool, you will receive an invitation to apply for a work permit. You will have 10 days to accept the invitation to apply, and you must complete your work permit application within 20 days of the date you accept the invitation to apply.
If you do not receive an invitation to apply, you can still keep your profile in the IEC pool until Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada closes the pool at the end of the season, or until you are no longer eligible for the IEC program.
Citizens of the following countries can participate in the IEC program:
- Costa Rica
- Czech Republic
- Hong Kong
- Korea, Rep.
- New Zealand
- San Marino
- United Kingdom
